CARE AND VOLUNTEERING IN TRANSFORMATION
The Hannah Arendt Institute for Totalitarianism Research (HAIT) at the TU Dresden organizes its first exploratory online workshop on care and volunteering in the post-socialist transformation. As due to COVID-19 this workshop cannot take place in Dresden, we propose a digital format that allows for the exchange of ideas among scholars in the field.
This interdisciplinary workshop examines how social care regimes and welfare systems in East Germany and Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe experienced and reacted to the postsocialist transformation. Special attention will be paid to the particular role individual agency – and especially volunteering as one particularly important form of individual agency – played in shaping the care institutions and initiatives throughout the period of abrupt political change in various postsocialist countries. The contributions by international scholars from Germany, Denmark, Austria, Serbia, the UK, and Romania explore dimensions of care, gender and age, as well as the voluntariness associated with them, in the long transformation period, spanning from the 1980s to the 2000s.
